Title:  (SR500) NHI Innovations: Bridge Preservation
Date/Time:  3/15/2012 2:30 PM - 4:00 PM Eastern Time
Description:  State departments of transportation and other bridge owners are faced with significant challenges in addressing the Nation's highway bridge preservation and replacement needs. As bridge stewards and owners we need to become more strategic, adopting and implementing systematic processes for bridge preservation as an integral component of the overall management of our bridge assets. Preservation activities often cost much less than major reconstruction or replacement activities. Delaying or foregoing warranted preservation treatments results in worsening condition. Such delay can escalate the feasible treatment or activity from preservation to replacement, resulting in extensive work and higher cost. This webconference, based on the FHWA Bridge Preservation Guide, Maintaining a State of Good Repair Using Cost Effective Investment Strategies, addresses bridge preservation. Timely and effective bridge preservation of sound bridges assures their structural integrity and extends their useful life before they require replacement. The presenters will share cost effective bridge preservation practices: Moderator: Myint Lwin, P.E., S.E., Director, FHWA Office of Bridge Technology Bridge Preservation Update on National Efforts: Anwar Ahmad, Bridge Preservation Engineer, FHWA Office of Bridge Technology Bridge Preservation Related Performance Measures: George Hearn, Associate Professor, University of Colorado Boulder Virginia's Bridge Preservation Program: Adam Matteo, Assistant State Structures and Bridge Engineer, Virginia Department of Transportation
