(SR500) NHI Innovations: GIS Tools for Linking Transportation and Natural Resource Planning
NHI Seminar Series
12/20/2012 2:30 PM - 4:00 PM EST
Learn how optimization decision support tools, project selection criteria development techniques, and green infrastructure mapping can better balance the needs of transportation projects with environmental concerns at this webinar sponsored by the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) and the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials Technology Implementation Group.
This webinar will help participants learn about the application of optimization decision support tools in selecting green infrastructure implementation projects (e.g., land acquisition and/or mitigation) and how this process can identify projects that deliver the 'best bang for the buck.' The webinar will discuss the significant benefits that optimization can provide for regulators, land trusts, infrastructure providers, local governments, and conservationists by stretching limited resources to accomplish more on the ground.
This webinar is a follow-up to the June 2011 "Transportation Innovations: Linking Transportation and Natural Resource Planning Through Environmental GIS Tools" that highlighted the experiences of Maryland and Texas. Both states have pioneered GIS planning approaches for transportation to improve environmental outcomes and enhance project delivery. This session will highlight case studies that apply optimization as part of the implementation of green infrastructure planning initiatives and review project selection criteria strategies using the Logic Scoring of Preference method for prioritizing implementation opportunities.
The presenters will be:
1. Mr. Daniel W. Johnson, Environmental Program Specialist, FHWA Resource Center at Baltimore (Moderator)
2. Will Allen, III, Director of Strategic Conservation, The Conservation Fund
3. Dr. Kent Messer, Associate Professor of Applied Economics and Statistics, University of Delaware
