National Geotechnical Inspector Qualification

PowerPoint Version (9 Mb)
(PowerPoint files can be viewed with the PowerPoint Viewer)

Photograph of Excavator removing soil and rock within the cut and cover alignment of the Boston Central Artery Tunnel Project. Excavator is reaching over struts in a braced excavation.

Objective

The development of a nationally accepted qualification program that will serve to improve quality, ensure uniformity and establish a minimum standard of construction for geotechnical work.

Inspector Qualification

  • NATIONAL State/Industry/FHWA initiative (Office of Infrastructure/NHI)

  • Coordinated with National Regional Certification Groups

  • Program is to be administered by the Regional Groups

Photograph shows the I-93 Charles River Crossing Cable Stayed bridge under construction. A large tower crane is in the foreground and the South Tower of the Bridge is completed with the majority of the cables installed. The background shows the North Tower at about 50% completion.

Proposed Modules

  • Driven Pile Foundations COMPLETE
  • Drilled Shaft Foundations COMPLETE
  • Subsurface Investigations
  • MSE Walls/RSS
  • Embankments/Cut Slopes
  • Anchored/Soil Nail Walls
Photograph shows an aerial view of the Fort Point Channel and the construction work underway. In the foreground is the Casting Basin with four nearly complete concrete immersed tunnel tubes. The casting basin is a large dewatered cofferdam which enables the construction of the concrete immersed tunnel tubes which will be floated out and sunk into their final position in the Fort Point Channel to complete the I-90 Fort Point Channel Tunnel Crossing. In the background Deep Soil Mixing equipment and Drilled Shaft equipment is operating within the Channel from Barges and on land adjacent to the Boston Post Office Facility and South Station.
