Title:  SR500 NHI Innovations: Precast Bent System for Use in High Seismic Regions

Description:  Accelerated Bridge Construction (ABC) techniques have the potential for significantly improving the delivery of our nations bridges. They can speed the time of construction, reduce impacts to traffic, businesses and neighborhoods, and the environment. Around the country, numerous projects utilizing ABC have demonstrated their value. However, the use of ABC in moderate to high seismic regions has been limited. The requirements for seismic design of bridges and the approaches used for ABC may conflict with one another. Typical ABC techniques use Prefabricated Bridge Elements and Systems (PBES) and these elements are typically connected at locations where the highest seismic demands are placed on a bridge during an earthquake. The project highlighted in this Webinar demonstrates the success of deploying a precast bent or pier system that can be used in high seismic regions to connect PBES and still deliver the seismic performance that is expected and required of modern bridges. The bent system uses precast column and cap beam (crossbeam) elements that are joined into an integral unit using newly developed connection details. This method ensures that the seismic performances as well as the service performance of the bridge are adequate. The session will provide a brief overview of the bent system; the testing done to validate the overall performance of the system; and the design, specification, and construction of a demonstration project using the bent system. The demonstration project is a replacement bridge over Interstate 5 in Washington State. The session will also provide open discussion with the developers and designers of this bent system.
