(SR250) Freeway and Interchange Safety Evaluation Using the Enhanced Interchange Analysis Tool ISATe
NHI Seminar Series
10/2/2013 1:00 PM - 3:00 PM EST
Improved safety is a key goal for many freeway and interchange projects. Until recently, planners and designers lacked suitable analytical tools to examine the safety performance of freeways and interchanges and to anticipate the safety performance of new or reconstructed interchanges.
The newly developed ISATe tool, when included in a freeway and interchange safety evaluation process, offers a major advancement of planners and engineers to make more informed project design decisions. A meaningful safety evaluation that contributes to better design choices can not only save lives, but also save project time and money. Webinar participants will hear about the safety impacts of some freeway and interchange design options and intersection and interchange treatments and how the newly developed ISATe software tool can help evaluate freeway and interchange safety.
The webinar will provide Federal, State, and local agencies with technical assistance and advice for conducting safety evaluations on freeway and interchange projects in their jurisdictions and utilizing the ISATe in project decision-making to ultimately improve safety performance on our nation's highways. The webinar is intended for transportation engineers and planners responsible for the planning, design, or operation of freeway facilities and possessing a basic familiarity of the Highway Safety Manual (2010 AASHTO).
The research efforts leading to development of ISATe was sponsored by the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials, in cooperation with the Federal Highway Administration, and was conducted in the National Cooperative Highway Research Program which is administered by the Transportation Research Board of the National Academies.
