This webinar provides a general overview of the Embedded Data Collector-EDC system for dynamically monitored driven concrete piles. The EDC system consists of a wireless Bluetooth radio/controller connected to strain and accelerometer gauges embedded near the top and bottom of the pile in the casting yard prior to concrete placement, and allows for monitoring stress levels during pre-stressing operations. During pile driving, the signals from the gauges in the pile are collected, stored, wirelessly transmitted and analyzed in, real time (blow by blow) with a laptop computer in the field. The system provides estimates of static capacity, compressive and tensile stress levels and assessment of pile integrity making use of top and bottom instrumentation. This innovation in dynamic testing gives owners and contractors new options for construction and quality control of prestressed concrete piles. The presenters will discuss the background of the development of this system, how it was evaluated in Florida, Virginia and North Carolina, discuss its advantages and limitations, and share their experiences.
